My body flashed hot, then cold. I wanted to shout at him, to tell him that he had no right to talk to my pa that way. He had no right to say that about folks from anywhere! We’d lost our homes. All we wanted was a chance to make our lives better.

I expected Pa to say something. But instead of arguing, he swung the car around and drove back toward the makeshift town.

The ball of ice that had been thawing inside me since we left our farm refroze. If Pa wasn’t standing up for us, then things were worse than I feared.

Pa pulled over on the side of the road, behind a line of cars, and parked.

“We’ll have to find food and shelter tomorrow,” he said. “For now, it’ll be another night of sleeping in the vehicle.”

Ma reached out, but Pa moved away. “I should see about food,” he said gruffly.

“It’s fine,” Ma said. “We’re not that hungry.” She turned to face me. Unshed tears were in her eyes. She gave me a trembling smile. “Are we, Millie?”

I shook my head. “No, Ma. Not at all.”

It was true. I wasn’t hungry—I was sick to my stomach.

“Fine,” said Pa. “Let’s try to get some shut-eye.”

I curled up, facing the rear of the car. I was terrified we had made things worse. We’d left Oklahoma to get away from the dirt. Now, it seemed, we’d be living in it.
